写生
Shasei
Sketching from life; faithful observation
October 14 is the birthday of poet Masaoka Shiki, born in 1867.
Poet Masaoka Shiki made 写生 (shasei)—sketching from life—central to his approach to haiku and prose.
Language note: 写生 (shasei) means sketching from life.
Start with what you can observe, then put it into words.
Close observation can make ordinary details newly visible.
Practice:
見たものを、自分の言葉で写生する。
Mita mono o, jibun no kotoba de shasei suru.
Render what you see from life in your own words.
