宇宙飛行
Uchū hikō
Spaceflight
September 12 is Japan’s Space Day, marking Mamoru Mohri’s 1992 launch aboard Endeavour as the first Japanese person to fly on the Space Shuttle. Toyohiro Akiyama became the first Japanese person in space on December 2, 1990, aboard Soyuz TM-11.
Language note: 宇宙 (uchū) means space; 飛行 (hikō) means flight. Together, 宇宙飛行 (uchū hikō) means spaceflight. Add 士 (shi) to get 宇宙飛行士 (uchū hikōshi), meaning an astronaut.
A journey can matter for the questions it lets us ask, as well as the place it reaches.
DJW practice example: 宇宙飛行について、もっと知りたい。
Romaji: Uchū hikō ni tsuite, motto shiritai.
I want to learn more about spaceflight.
