October 17 is the final day of Ise Jingu's 2026 神嘗祭 (Kannamesai) observances.
神嘗祭 Kannamesai Kannamesai, the new-grain offering rite
Ise Jingu's observances run from October 15–17, with the final Naikū rites on October 17. This differs from 新嘗祭 (にいなめさい / Niinamesai) on November 23, when the Emperor offers and partakes of new grain and rites are also held at shrines across Japan.
Language note: 神嘗祭 (かんなめさい / Kannamesai) is the Ise Jingu rite in which the year's new grain is first offered to Amaterasu Ōmikami in gratitude.
A harvest becomes a ritual of gratitude when the first grain is offered before it is enjoyed.
DJW practice example: 新米を供えて、収穫に感謝する。 Shinmai o sonaete, shūkaku ni kansha suru. Offer new rice and give thanks for the harvest.
