醸す Kamosu To brew; to create an atmosphere

October 1 is Sake Day. The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association connects the date with autumn's new rice harvest and the beginning of the traditional brewing season.

醸す (kamosu) means to brew through fermentation. It also means to create a mood or atmosphere: 雰囲気を醸す (fun'iki o kamosu). The same verb connects making something in a brewery with shaping how a room feels.

Notice what your words and small choices add to the mood of a room.

Practice: 木の香りが、落ち着いた雰囲気を醸す。 Ki no kaori ga, ochitsuita fun'iki o kamosu. The scent of wood creates a calm atmosphere.
