自由闊達
Jiyū kattatsu
Free and open-minded
October 3 marks the anniversary of Sony co-founder Akio Morita’s death. His official biography describes him as 自由闊達 (jiyū kattatsu)—free and open-minded—even through difficulties; today’s phrase celebrates that spirit.
Language note: 自由 means free; 闊達 suggests an open, broad-minded disposition. Together the expression describes a culture in which people can think and speak freely. Readings:
