親しき仲に礼儀あり

Shitashiki naka ni reigi ari

Even close friends owe each other courtesy.

Traditional Japanese proverb

A midweek reminder to thank the people whose support we count on.

This traditional proverb reminds us to keep showing consideration to people we know well. Familiarity can make it easy to take another person for granted.

Language note: 親しき (shitashiki) is an older form of 親しい (shitashii): close or familiar. 仲 (naka) means a relationship; 礼儀 (reigi) means courtesy. Closeness still calls for consideration.

Courtesy can be one way of saying: I don't take you for granted.

Practice: 親しい友達にも、お礼を言おう。

Shitashii tomodachi ni mo, orei o iō.

Say thank you even to close friends.
