September 22 is Junko Tabei’s birthday. The Japanese mountaineer became the first woman to summit Everest in 1975.
計画通りに行かないことも計画の内
Keikaku dōri ni ikanai koto mo keikaku no uchi.
Things not going according to plan are also part of the plan.
Junko Tabei · 田部井淳子 (Tabei Junko)
In a 2013 interview, Tabei described preparing carefully for climbs while allowing for changing mountain conditions. When snow blocked the route, she considered what could be done in the new circumstances.
Expect some things to go differently from the plan—that is normal. Prepare carefully, then adapt when conditions change.
Language note:
計画通り (keikaku dōri): according to plan.
行かない (ikanai): not go or work out.
計画の内 (keikaku no uchi): part of the plan.
も (mo) adds “also” or “too.”
Practice:
計画を変えて、別の道を探そう。
Keikaku o kaete, betsu no michi o sagasō.
Let’s adjust the plan and look for another route.
